# MacBook Parts by A-Number: A Sourcing Guide for Bangladesh Repair Shops
Short answer: Source MacBook parts by the A-number printed on the bottom case, not by the marketing name. One name such as "MacBook Pro 13-inch 2020" covers several A-numbers with different displays, top cases, batteries and boards. Confirm the A-number, EMC number and colour before ordering, and specify the display grade in writing.
Ordering MacBook parts by A-number is the single habit that separates repair shops with low parts returns from those with drawers full of LCDs that do not fit. A customer saying "MacBook Pro 2020, 13-inch" could mean at least three different machines, two Intel and one Apple silicon, and their screens, keyboards and batteries are not interchangeable. The A-number tells you which one is on your bench.
This guide is for Bangladesh repair shops and parts traders buying MacBook parts wholesale from Shenzhen.
A MacBook A-number is Apple's regulatory model number, printed on the bottom case in a line that reads "Model A" followed by four digits, for example A2337 or A2681. It identifies the hardware design that passed regulatory testing, which makes it the most reliable key for matching physical replacement parts.
Apple's own identification pages, such as Identify your MacBook Pro model and Identify your MacBook Air model, list models by name, year, colour, model identifier (for example "MacBookPro17,1") and part numbers. The parts market catalogues by A-number, so you need both.
The EMC number is a second regulatory number printed near the A-number on many MacBooks (for example "EMC 3598"). Where two production runs share an A-number but differ in internal components, the EMC number helps separate them. Record both on the job card.
The fastest way is to close the lid, turn the machine over and read the small text on the bottom case. On most MacBook Air models it sits near the hinge edge; on many MacBook Pro models it is printed in the centre area. The print is very small and faint on recent models, so use a phone flashlight at an angle or a magnifier.
Apple notes that the serial number is usually printed on the underside of the Mac, near the regulatory markings (Apple Support: Find your Mac model name and serial number). If the Mac boots, About This Mac shows the model name and serial number, and you can match these against Apple's identification pages.
Watch for two traps:
Apple reuses marketing names across very different hardware. Two common examples Bangladesh repair shops will see:
| Marketing name | A-number | Processor | Notes for parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13-inch (2020) | A2179 | Intel | Different logic board, battery and keyboard from the M1 model |
| MacBook Air 13-inch (M1, 2020) | A2337 | Apple M1 | Visually similar, parts not cross-compatible across the board |
| MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020, two Thunderbolt ports) | A2289 | Intel | Touch Bar model |
| MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020, four Thunderbolt ports) | A2251 | Intel | Touch Bar model, different top case and battery from A2289 |
| MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020) | A2338 | Apple M1 | Touch Bar model, Apple silicon |
If you order a "MacBook Pro 13 2020 battery" without an A-number, there is a real chance it arrives for the wrong machine.
Almost every major internal part is matched to a specific A-number, and some are matched more narrowly still:
Keyboard layout matters in Bangladesh: most units here are US-layout, but grey-import machines arrive with UK and other layouts. Note the layout on the job card along with the A-number.
Display assemblies are the most expensive part most shops order, and grade labels vary between suppliers. These are the grades you will see in the Shenzhen supply chain and what they should mean:
| Grade | What it is | Condition | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium / new assembly | Newly built assembly with a new panel in a new or as-new lid | No cosmetic marks; full brightness | Customer-paying repairs, warranty-sensitive jobs |
| Refurbished | Original panel or lid that has been reworked, e.g. new backlight, polariser or glass | Minor variation possible; should be fully functional | Mid-price repairs where cost matters |
| OEM pull, A grade | Removed from a donor machine, tested working | Light cosmetic wear allowed | Budget repairs, older Intel models |
| OEM pull, C grade | Removed from a donor machine, tested working | Visible scratches, dents or marks on lid or panel | Lowest-cost repairs, internal use |
| Aftermarket "no logo" | Non-original lid, often without the Apple logo | Varies widely | Only where the customer accepts it in writing |
As with phone screens, "grade" is a commercial label, not a regulated standard. Ask the supplier to state panel brightness, dead-pixel tolerance, cosmetic condition and whether the camera, antenna and hinge are new or reused. Our iPhone display grades guide applies the same discipline to iPhone screens.
Apple moved MacBooks from Intel processors to Apple silicon starting with the M1 models in 2020. For repair shops, the differences go beyond performance:
A working display that shows "Unknown" in Parts & Service is a conversation to have at the counter, not after pickup.
Touch Bar MacBook Pro models (13-inch, 15-inch and 16-inch, from 2016 to the M2 13-inch) need top cases with the Touch Bar fitted, and the Touch Bar and its flex are additional failure points. A non-Touch Bar top case will not fit a Touch Bar A-number, and vice versa.
Colour is the other common ordering mistake. Display lids and top cases are colour-specific: older models come in silver, space grey, gold or rose gold, while recent MacBook Air models add midnight and starlight. A silver lid on a space grey machine is an obvious mismatch the customer will notice immediately. Specify colour alongside the A-number and grade on every order.
Apple's Self Service Repair programme gives experienced individuals access to genuine parts, tools and repair manuals for out-of-warranty repairs, with Repair Assistant and System Configuration as post-repair software tools. Availability is limited to certain countries and regions and to specific models, so check the live page for current coverage before promising a customer a genuine-part repair through that channel.
For most Bangladesh repair shops, the practical model is a mix: high-quality third-party or refurbished assemblies for the bulk of jobs, with clear customer disclosure about part type and any calibration message.
K.H. Infinity (KHI) is a Bangladesh B2B importer of MacBook replacement parts (HS Code 8473.30.00), supplying LCD assemblies, top cases, trackpads, batteries, flex cables, boards and ICs for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, listed by A-number and model year, with CE and RoHS supplier documentation and in-house NBR customs clearance.
Shops that also stock phone parts can combine MacBook orders with screens and batteries through our phone parts programme. For first-time importers, the import from China trade route and customs clearance service explain how consolidated parts orders clear at Chattogram and Dhaka. Customers who buy a repaired MacBook often need a new charger too, so our guide to phone charger import, GaN and USB PD is a useful companion.

It is printed on the bottom case in small text beginning "Model A" followed by four digits, such as A2337. On many MacBook Air models it is near the hinge edge, and on many MacBook Pro models it sits in the centre area. Use a flashlight at an angle because the print is faint on newer machines.
No. The A-number is the regulatory model number printed on the case, while the model identifier (for example MacBookPro17,1) is shown in macOS System Information. Apple's identification pages list model identifiers and part numbers; parts suppliers usually catalogue by A-number, so it helps to record both.
Generally no. The 2020 MacBook Air (A2179, Intel) and MacBook Air M1 (A2337) share a name and look similar, but their logic boards, batteries and many other parts differ. Always match parts to the A-number, not the marketing name.
A Premium assembly is newly built with a new panel and no cosmetic wear. An OEM pull is an original assembly removed from a donor machine and tested working, graded A for light wear or C for visible marks. Ask the supplier to state cosmetic condition and brightness in writing.
On Apple silicon Macs running recent macOS, a replaced display may show a "Finish Repair" notification and appear as Unknown in Parts & Service if it has not been calibrated through Repair Assistant. Apple says the part can still be used, but tell the customer before the repair.
Not always, but it helps. The EMC number distinguishes production variants that share an A-number, which matters for some logic boards, flex cables and port boards. Record it on the job card with the A-number and colour.
